[having missed her birthday under a general "urgent raincheck" didn't really bother him. but kaede had, actually, gone through the trouble of inviting him to go and expected his company. the reasons he'll keep to himself, but the girl deserves something to serve as an apology.]

one day, sarah was walking home from school when her boyfriend drove by and honked at her to get in. she got in his car and he drove her to the lake. her boyfriend said he was going to tell her something very important.

sarah could have sworn he was going to propose. however he flipped her off pushed her in the lake and yelled, “I am breaking up with you, you awful ********!! I hate you and I think that maybe you should just end your ********* life! DUMB *******!!!”

he laughed and drove off. it was winter. sarah floated there in the water freezing cold and felt the worst she had her entire life. shivering she decided that she didn’t want to ever have her heart ever broken like that again. she slipped under the lake’s surface never to be seen in living flesh again.

her parents cried. her mom went insane and killed herself three days later. her dad is in prison accused of murder.

later that week sarah’s ex-boyfriend was taking a shower when she reached from the drain, rotting and bloody. “7 days.” she whispered and her breath smelled like a pond of dead fish. 7 days later she dragged him down into the drain back to the lake. he slipped into the water never to be seen in living flesh again.

[ Kaede had forgotten about her texts, not able to go back to read over them once Barnaby's name was removed from the contacts. just as she had ranted about in the texts, her focus had shifted to her dad, but it wasn't 100% on him. it was on other members of the LEU, other residents she knew had lost someone and reached back to her, whether to welcome the extended hand or to tell her to buzz off.

she had to stop counting the days, wondering whether or not Barnaby was coming back. (he was coming back, she kept telling herself.) she focused more on Halloween coming up, on the surprise birthday party that would happen the day before.

she's finishing up her homework, occupying the space room within the LEU once again, when her phone lights up in her peripheral vision. she is so casual as she reaches for it without taking her eyes from her textbook, breaking concentration to see who is messaging her and what about.

Barnaby's name is the last person she expects.

her breath catches in her throat, fingers shaking as she unlocks her phone to open it up and read the message. any sort of thoughts she had moments before have left her pretty little head, because Barnaby is alive Barnaby is alive Barnaby is alive—

she lets out a laugh to no one in particular, short and relief flooding her. she couldn't cry even if she wanted to (although she figures she might once she sees him). the textbook is pushed off her lap and to the side as she jumps up, John lifting his head quizzically at her sudden burst of movement. her fingers fly over the screen as she slips her shoes on, trying her best to keep from bouncing all over the place. ]

All I know is that I am happy to
see something from you on my phone again.
