personality.
It is important to remember that Kaede is a child first and foremost. She may come across as very mature and composed, but she is still a kid. She can be very energetic and friendly, and she is active, as well. The second episode of the series places the audience at an ice skating arena in Sternbild City, where she is a participant in a competition and eagerly calling her father, Kotetsu, to come and see her perform. (However, her doubts about him making it are shattered when his job calls upon him once again, leaving her disappointed.) She is also aware of the latest trends and the must-have items, as any preteen would be. She is quite the fan of Barnaby, who, unbeknownst to her, is her father's partner. (Barnaby saved her from some falling debris in the second episode, when the competition is unexpectedly cancelled due to a rogue NEXT wreaking havoc to the arena.)

Kaede, being only eleven years old, does have a temper and is quick to say blunt, hurtful statements to those around her, especially her dad. She does not tolerate excuses, and even calls her grandmother out when her grandmother tries to dumb down how disappointed Kaede is to Kotetsu. Throughout the series, Kaede expresses her disappointment & frustration to Kotetsu because of his numerous broken promises due to his job. She is unaware that he is a Hero, and thus thinks he has a normal but overdemanding job that keeps them apart. Kotetsu, as a result of his demanding job being a Hero, inadvertently tends to treat her as a child of younger years than she actually is, and she quickly sets him in his place to not do that. The general relationship between Kaede & Kotetsu is shaky — he is always having to apologize and come up with some excuse to one more broken promise, and she brushes him off, letting him know that her expectations when it comes to him delivering on his words is low.

Kotetsu does not realize until a visit that he (finally) makes to Oriental Town — his hometown — that she wants them to be together and she is afraid of being left alone. She has been with her grandmother since she was four when her mother, Tomoe, passed away, and Kotetsu placed Kaede in his mother's care while he was a Hero in Sternbild City. During his visit, his mother hurts her back, and Kaede is so distraught over it being worse than it is that she explodes on him when he chides her for not heading to school already. Her grandmother's fall affects her so much that she cannot focus on her lessons at school, and immediately after school ends she heads to the local shrine to say a prayer for her grandmother. Ironically enough, she becomes trapped in the shrine when a storm hits and causes several trees to block the doors, and she is saved by Kotetsu moments before the shrine collapses. This strengthens the bond between them, and it also finalizes Kotetsu's decision to retire as a Hero (due to his declining NEXT powers) and come back to Oriental Town. Unfortunately, he breaks the promise due to new information unraveling his partner, Barnaby, but Kaede thinks he does not want to leave his job for her. This broken promise is worsened by the fact that Kaede's NEXT powers manifest themselves as he is leaving Oriental Town, and phone calls made to his mother later on reveal that Kaede, not being able to properly control her powers, is inadvertently destroying the Kaburagi home (breaking the dining room table, destroying the television, bending numerous cutlery into indistinguishable shapes) and he cannot be there to help her.

Even though they butt heads constantly, two of Kotetsu's biggest qualities (which can also be seen as flaws) are reflected in Kaede. Kaede shares her father's desire to help others out, including her father when he is falsely accused of murder. She realizes that just because he may not keep promises and he disappoints her numerous times, he would never do such a thing. So intense is her belief that the second biggest quality she shares with her father exhibits itself: she acts before she thinks. Without telling her grandmother or uncle, she leaves Oriental Town and arrives at Sternbild City, ready to help her father declare his innocence. It is only when she gets to Sternbild City that she realizes she does not have a concrete plan to help her father out. That belief still burns inside her when she comes across Kotetsu surrounded by the other Heroes (brainwashed by the antagonist who also set up Kotetsu as the murderer), and ignores the Heroes' concerns for her about moving away from Kotetsu and her statements about him being innocent.

But, as soon as Kotetsu's name is cleared, Kaede turns on the tough love and demands that he tell her why he hid the fact that he was a Hero for six years from her. His response is that he did not want her to worry, but it does cause her worry, because she does not know what he is doing, what it entails, and if she will ever see him again, thus bouncing off of her fear of losing more family members once more. This fear shows up once more during the final battle, when Barnaby and she believe Kotetsu to be dead due to too many injuries sustained in his fight. (He simply passed out from the pain.)

On the other hand, Kaede has shown that she can be mature and level-headed in the best and the worst of situations. When she and the other Heroes are captured by the same antagonist who set Kotetsu up, she concentrates on freeing herself from her bonds using her NEXT powers, instead of letting her NEXT powers overtake her from emotion. Once she is free, she takes down her captors and frees the Heroes in the process. After the antagonist is taken down, Kotetsu finally announces his retirement from being a Hero, and returns to Oriental Town with Kaede. A year later, he is back in Sternbild City, and he explains that she convinced him to go back to being a Hero. (She thought his laying around the house all the time was making him a "really lame dad.") She realizes that being a Hero made her father happy, and because she now knows what his job is, she wants him to do what he can with the last of his powers. This would be a reflection of the late Tomoe, who pushed Kotetsu to continue being a Hero while she was in the hospital suffering from an illness. (After her passing, he fought through his grief and continued to be a Hero.)

Kaede wants what is best for her and for her family, and even though she may lash out against them from time to time, she loves them, and she knows they love her, too. She wants to enjoy the time she has with them and not let it be riddled with mistrust and lies. She may be blunt, but she does not do it intentionally, but as a way for those around her to see that she is hurt when they do or say things they do not mean. Family is still family in the end, and that is what she aspires to have at the end of the day.

abilities.
» CANON: Kaede has the ability to duplicate the powers of anyone she touches, or who touches her. For example, if her father (Kotetsu T. Kaburagi) were to touch her shoulder, she would gain his Hundred Power ability. But, the next person she touches, or who touches her — Yuri Petrov, for example — will overwrite the Hundred Power to now be their power instead (Fire Manipulation, in Yuri's case). However, regardless of the power, she does not have much control over a copied power, and to make the copied power work for her in a specific way takes much concentration and focus on her end.

Outside of her NEXT powers, Kaede is still a growing preteen who is young enough to learn and excel at anything she puts her mind to. She is shown to have above average athletic skills reflected in her interest of figure skating, and participating in a figure skating tournament. This would allow her to not only be more flexible, but also have faster reflexes.

» EXSILIUM: To see Kaede involved in figure skating was 1) very cute!, and 2) very brave. Figure skating involves numerous spins and jumps, increasing in difficulty as a participant grows older and more advanced with what they can pull off. This also means falls from flawed executions are expected, and adolescents who continue to do figure skating — or any sort of ice skating sport! — grow to have a tough skin and can handle a fall or two every now and then. I wanted to take Kaede's love of figure skating and have it involved in her weapon of choice. That, and I wanted something that would not throw her off-balance so much, such as a firearm or a blade. I wanted to keep it age-appropriate too.

When she leaves the Initiative Hold, she will be in possession of a pair of boots. These boots will give her the ability to generate ice under her feet, which can be used offensively and defensively. It gives her the freedom to move and be active and can also aid in kicking up a quick shield, if need be. With practice and dedication, each level would take one to three months for her to master.

As of April 21st, Kaede has switched the boots for a ring, which will allow her to expand her powers more and be used with her entire being and not just her legs. You can see what she will be learning and mastering over here!
